CHAPTER 7

Chi Herbs

In China, certain herbs that have been shown to cultivate and protect chi have been consumed for centuries. They are classified as tonifying chi, thereby helping support a strong constitution. Chi herbs can help increase metabolism and enhance the food-to-energy process. Chi herbs can also aid the body in transforming unwanted accumulations of water from the middle jiao. Most, if not all, of the chi herbs tonify the spleen. These herbs help ensure we maintain an adequate metabolism and protect our jing reserves. Chi herbs work to warm and activate the body’s breakdown and assimilation of nutrients without excessively stimulating the nervous system. This is very important. They warm the middle jiao without giving one the jitters, thereby helping avoid adrenal (jing) exertion. However, herbs may be harvested before they have reached maturity or therapeutic vitality, and such poor quality or immature herbs may produce undesirable effects. The descriptions that follow include insights on how to determine the quality of chi herbs before buying them.
